18% OF CHILDREN IN REGION V, AGES 0 -17, ARE LIVING IN SINGLE PARENT
FAMILIES IDENTIFYING THIS POPULATION AS A SIGNIFICANT PART OF OUR
AREA NEEDING PARENTING EDUCATION AND SUPPORT.

DR. SEAN BROTHERSON, EXTENSION FAMILY SCIENCE SPECIALIST AT NORTH
DAKOTA UNIVERSITY, RECENTLY COMPILED PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM AN
ONGOING ASSESSMENT, THE NORTH DAKOTA INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY AND
COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT,FOR USE IN PLANNING PURPOSES BY THE
NORTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION SERVICE. I HAVE DR.
BROTHERSON'S PERMISSION TO SHARE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WITH
YOU FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS GRANT ONLY.

PARENTS SAW THE FOLLOWING CONCERNS AS KEY ISSUES FOR PARENT-
CHILD RELATIONSHIPS: SETTING RULES AND BOUNDARIES WITH CHILDREN,
COMMUNICATION WITH CHILDREN, AND DISCIPLINE AND GUIDANCE OF
CHILDREN. DEVELOPING HEALTHY PARENT-CHILD RELATIONSHIPS AND
PARENTING STYLES AND PRACTICES WERE ALSO SEEN AS SIGNIFICANT
ISSUES RELATING TO PARENT/CHILD INTERACTION.

KEY ISSUES PRIORITIZED IN THE FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS AND PRACTICES
CATEGORY WERE: CHALLENGES WITH FAMILY TIME, OVERSCHEDULING AND
BALANCING FAMILY AND WORK RESPONSIBILITIES.

THE REGION V PARENTING RESOURCES CENTER ADDRESSES EACH OF THESE
ISSUES IN AN IN-DEPTH WAY THROUGH A NUMBER OF CURRICULUMS,
CLASSES AND RESOURCE MATERIALS.

4.

Project's service area, target population and number of persons to be served.
The Parenting Resources Center serves residents of Region V located in SE North
Dakota comprised of Cass, Steele, Ransom, Richland, Sargent, and Traill Counties. The
target population is parents of children ages 0 - 18. However, all adults who work with
youth can and are welcome to benefit from this information. Healthy families, parents
and youth are at the core of the services offered by the Parenting Resources Center. It is
also necessary to tune into the needs of youth to effectively provide beneficial and timely
information to parents. The 2003 North Dakota Kids Count! fact book lists the 2002
population of Region Vas 163,082, also noting that nearly 40,000 families reside in this
region of the state. Our parents are entering and maintaining a position in the work force
at increasingly higher rates creating the need for quality childcare. The 2003 North
Dakota Kids Count! fact book notes that there were over 500 licensed child care
providers in the state during 2002.

5.

The Region V CSCC has developed five goals and objectives: 1) That all children
are cared for and nurtured; 2) That all children are safe physically and
emotionally; 3) That all children have a healthy start and healthy future; 4) That all
children have effective education; and 5) That all children shall contribute to
community through service and positive behaviors.

Please indicate which Region V CSCC goal(s)/objective(s) your project is targeting
including documentation to justify need.
