<br />SUBJECT POLICY # Page of <br />MOTOR VEHICLE PURSUIT 1.09 4 of? <br /> <br />J <br /> <br />F. If at any time during the course of a motor vehicle pursuit, any person is <br />injured as a result of the pursuit, the primary unit will be responsible for <br />ensuring immediate assistance is provided to the injured person. This may <br />include directing the secondary police unit to stop and render such assistance. <br />If a secondary police unit or other police unit is not readily available to <br />provide immediate assistance to an injured person, the primary police unit will <br />terminate their involvement in the pursuit and render the assistance required. <br /> <br />VI. TERMINATION OF A MOTOR VEmCLE PURSVIT: <br /> <br />A. The decision to initiate or otherwise engage in a motor vehicle pursuit is <br />reversible. <br /> <br />Deputies will terminate a pursuit when: <br /> <br />1. It becomes apparent the risks to the safety of the general public are <br />greater by continuing the pursuit than the risks if the person fleeing <br />from an deputy is allowed to escape immediate apprehension; or <br />2. The identity of the person fleeing from an deputy can be determined <br />to a point that apprehension can be accomplished more safely at aJ <br />later time and there is no longer a need for immediate apprehension; <br />or <br />3. The shift supervisor orders the pursuit to be terminated. <br /> <br />B. Upon termination of the pursuit all police units involved will come to a <br />complete stop and notify the shift supervisor by radio of their location. The <br />shift supervisor will direct the primary and secondary units to follow the last <br />known direction of travel of the fleeing vehicle to insure the fleeing vehicle <br />has not been involved in or otherwise caused a motor vehicle crash. The <br />primary and secondary police units will conduct this action for a reasonable <br />distance and while doing so will obey all traffic ree:ulations. <br /> <br />VII. SHIFT SVPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES: <br /> <br />A. The shift supervisor will be responsible for monitoring the progress of a motor <br />vehicle pursuit. The shift supervisor will also be responsible for the decisions <br />relative to the continuation of a pursuit when the circumstances indicate an <br />order to terminate the pursuit should have been given. <br /> <br />B. <br /> <br />The shift supervisor will require all deputy's involved to document a detailed <br />report regarding the incident and their involvement.
