The
courthouse was abandoned due to design deficiencies and expansion limitations.
· New 68,000 square foot courthouse and a new 138,000 square foot, direct
supervision jail facility.
· Three separate courthouse circulation sectors for public, staff, and inmate
movement. Jail inmates are easily moved from jail cell to courtroom without
entering public or courthouse staff corridors.
· Four jury courtrooms, one Commissioners court for intake appearances, Clerk of
Courts, jury assembly, law library, and probate functions.
· The courtrooms are prepared for remote conferencing and video appearances.
They also include full video presentation capabilities.
· A special route from the jail vehicle garage allows direct transfer of state prison
inmates to the courts for hearings regarding violations committed in prison.
· Shelled third floor designed to accommodate at least two new courtrooms, and
other justice-related functions such as the District Attorney.
· Sheriffs Department renovation will be in the vacated 34,000 Courthouse
(Legal Services Building) adjacent to the new courthouse.
· The jail has 222 jail and 112 work release beds for 334 total.
· The jail is designed to easily accommodate three additional 56 bed jail pods.
· Staff efficiency: visitors visit inmates at the pod via a second floor walkway;
each pod has indoor exercise; each pod has a counseling/programming room;
each pod is wired for video arraignment and video conferencing.
