Vanyo Fargo, North Dakota Horace, North Dakota To Whom It May Concern: This letter is being submitted as part of the Cass County Government application for Cass County, North Dakota, to be considered for the Mosquito Abatement for Safety and Health Act Grant. The Board of County Commissioners strongly supports the application. Cass County is in a unique position to make this an extremely effective program. Cass County uses an integrated pest management approach to controlling mosquitoes using education, prevention and monitoring, as well as treatments to control mosquito populations. In 2003, residents of North Dakota experienced 549 cases of West Nile Virus, with four fatalities. Cass County covers 1,131,287 acres for mosquito surveillance on a seasonal basis. Cass County's ongoing strong commitment to the health and safety of its residents, combined with an immediate need to control the spread of mosquito-borne disease, makes Cass County Government the perfect candidate for this grant. It is important to note that mosquitoes, given their behavior patterns, resilient nature and enormous breeding potential, be controlled using environmentally safe methods. Cass County will continue to work toward the goal of providing a comprehensive program aimed at the invaluable factor of controlling nuisance mosquitoes, reducing the potential of mosquito-borne disease transmission and providing a comfortable and healthy environment for community residents.
