CHAPTER Two: THE ExiSTING SYSTEM
2.1 EXISTING METROPOLITAN BIKEWAY INVENTORY:

The existing metropolitan bicycling and pedestrian net\\'ork as illustrated in Map 2.6 consists of shared use
paths, bicycle lanes and shared roadways. Table 2.1 shows the classification and miles of the existing
network. As can be seen, of the total 204.32 miles of bicycle facility about 74.5% are Class I facility
(152,17 miles), 5.5% are Class II facility (11.24 miles) and 20% are Class III facility (40.91 miles).

Since 2000, the bike network has expanded by 67%, with 93% increase in Class I facilities, 21 % increase
in Class II facilities and 20% increase in Class III facilities. Among all the member jurisdictions Moorhead
saw the largest percentage increase for all three types of facilities - 251 for Class I facility, 32% for Class II
facility and 32% for Class III facility.

Appendix A.3 provides the detailed inventory of the existing bike facility in the metropolitan area, The
inventory suggests that the majority of the bike facilities are adequate for novice bicyclists. Map 4.2 shows
the rankings of the existing bike facilities in the Fargo-Moorhead area. A detailed description of the ranking
procedure is providcd in Appendix A.5, In the existing bikeway network, 1.19% of the bike facilities have
been graded 'very good', 28.25'Yo of the bike facilities are graded 'good', 41.58% of bike facilities are
graded 'fair' and 14.29% are graded 'poor'. The remaining 14.69% were new additions and were not
included in the ranking process. The ranks have been based on the paveme.nt condition, obstructions in the
bike\vay, conflicts with motor vehicles. provision of adequate lighting and sign age, traffic volume and
speed of adjacent roadways, connectivity with other bikeways and continuity of the bikeway.
