the six (6) field-training officers are feeling a little burned <br />out do to the number of staff they have trained. A <br />seventh FTO slot is being filled relieve this problem. <br />There will usually be 6-7 trainees in FTO training at one <br />time. <br /> <br />A group of seven (7) new staff completed the FTO <br />program and were found to be very competent by the <br />Shift Supervisors. There are two (2) trainees in the <br />newest group and more coming. <br /> <br />One of the highest priorities for in-service training is to <br />get more staff trained in booking. To minimize training. <br />time prior to opening of the new jail and thus reduce <br />costs, only a minimum number of staff were trained in <br />booking operations. Some non-booking staff have a little <br />training in booking but not enough to be proficient. This <br />situation seriously limits the flexibility of Shift Supervisors <br />when changing shift assignments do to illness, <br />vacations, etc. <br /> <br />:[n-service training has been provided in classification <br />and discipline. The result has been better staff <br />performance especially in progressive discipline. This <br />training probably accounts for at least part of the <br />reduction in inmate behavior problems. <br /> <br />The biggest obstacle to training is "time." There had <br />been four (4) hours per pay period available for training <br />under the twelve-hour shift schedule. The four hours <br />was also used for shift meetings -- a form of training. <br />However, the Shift Supervisors have used this time to <br />add staff during busy times of the day and week. At this <br />point overtime appears to be the only way to accomplish <br />in-service training. <br /> <br />There are other options for accomplishing in-service <br />training that may or may not be appropriate for <br />addressing the current in-service training needs.'
