<br />Commission Minutes--January 18, 2005 2848 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION #2005-1 <br />WHEREAS, the United Patriotic Bodies, speaking for and on behalf of the local veterans <br />community, has requested support from the County of Cass, as well as from other local <br />governing jurisdictions, in their efforts to petition the Minnesota Department of <br />Transportation (MNDOT) and the Legislature of the State of Minnesota and the North <br />Dakota Department of Transportation (ND DOT) and the Legislature of the State of North <br />Dakota to name the Main Avenue Bridge the "Veterans Memorial Bridge;" and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Cass County Board of Commissioners is highly supportive of efforts of local <br />veterans organizations to develop, design, raise the required funds, and construct a lasting <br />and more accessible Veterans Memorial, including the offering of potential use of public <br />property and the setting aside of local public matching funds for such memorial; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, naming of a local bridge - including the newly reconstructed Main Avenue <br />Bridge - in honor of area veterans is not incongruent with, and may even complement this <br />larger objective, provided such naming is undertaken fully in concert with the selected <br />bridge's architectural design and interpretive elements; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, given the enormity in undertaking the recently completed Main Avenue Bridge <br />replacement project, as well as the importance of the ongoing relationships with key federal, <br />state and local organizations, Cass County highly recommends the United Patriotic Bodies <br />seek similar support and necessary approval from the Federal Highway Administration, <br />Minnesota's Congressional Representatives, MNDOT, the Minnesota State Historic <br />Preservation Office, the Minnesota Historical Society, the Minnesota State Archeologist, <br />Clay County, the Clay County Historical Society, the City of Fargo and the Cass County <br />Historical Society regarding the proposed naming of the Main Avenue Bridge as "Veterans <br />Memorial Bridge." <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Cass County Commissioners that Cass <br />County does hereby support the petition by the United Patriotic Bodies to seek from the <br />State of Minnesota the naming of the Main Avenue Bridge as "Veterans Memorial Bridge." <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Cass County Board of Commissioners that Cass <br />County provides such support with the understanding that the United Patriotic Bodies and <br />other representative veterans organizations will seek similar support and necessary <br />approval regarding the proposed naming of the Main Avenue Bridge as "Veterans Memorial <br />Bridge" from the Federal Highway Administration, Minnesota's Congressional <br />Representatives, MNDOT, the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office, the Minnesota <br />Historical Society, the Minnesota State Archeologist, Clay County, the Clay County <br />Historical Society, the City of Fargo and the Cass County Historical Society. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Cass County Board of Commissioners that Cass <br />County supports design and placement of additional, appropriate signage denoting such <br />naming of the Main Avenue Bridge as "Veterans Memorial Bridge," provided such effort is <br />undertaken in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the City of <br />Moorhead, such effort is consistent with the bridge's architectural design and interpretive <br />elements, and the cost for such efforts is undertaken for, by and on behalf of the United <br />Patriotic Bodies and other representative veterans organizations. <br /> <br />Dated at Fargo, North Dakota, this 18th day of January, 2005. <br />
