SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, Agreement approved with West Central Regional Juvenile
Center to house Cass County juvenile offenders
Sheriff Paul D. Laney said during budget hearings in August the commission approved to
partner with Clay County to house juvenile offenders from Cass County. He said state and
federal officials have given a favorable recommendation to enter into a consortium with the
West Central Regional Juvenile Center Cooperative. The contract is for 10 years; however,
the county will negotiate bed space and the price based on averages each year.
Mr. Bennett asked about the total number of beds and what happens if space is not available.
Mr. Laney said the facility has 28 beds, and there are back up plans in the place if this occurs.
Mrs. Scherling asked about Attendant Care services, which Sheriff Laney said will stay in
Cass County. He said the program has federal guidelines which need to be followed, and it
is a better option for Cass County to continue providing these services.
Mr. Pawluk said he supports the partnership as it provides comparable services at a cost
savings.
