patrol cubicles and in January 2014, there will be fifteen patrol staff utilizing this room. A
cubicle consists of a four foot work space with no drawers shared with another individual. Each
patrol deputy receives a two foot by two foot area. There is currently no room to expand for
additional staff.
In January of 2014 the SRU will also be working out of the West Station. This will add an
additional twenty five people utilizing the space.
The West Station also has six hundred square feet of garage space which is critical to
investigations and the patrol staff. Over the last five years there has been an abundance of snow
and blizzard conditions. The patrol staff must work through the blizzard and these conditions
pack snow and ice in the vehicles. The garage space allows the patrol vehicles to thaw so they
will function normally in the conditions. During the winter of 2009 most of the four wheel
drives had mechanical issues related to compacted snow and ice. The first mechanical issue was
taken care of at Luther Ford. The mechanics identified the problem relating to snow and ice
compaction under the hood. The snow and ice compaction froze up the brakes, filled the filters
with snow and did not allow the belts and fans to turn properly. Thawing of vehicles has
become a routine part of winter maintenance on patrol vehicles and reduces maintenance labor
costs on the vehicles. The current shop rate per hour at Luther Ford is $112.95. Prior to leasing
the garage at the West Station the vehicles were thawed at the jail. This consistently provided
additional problems as the space in the jail garage is limited and is utilized by all area law
enforcement. The jail garage is a secure area for transporting and intake of jail inmates.
Thawing patrol vehicles in the jail garage created a full time job moving vehicles so the space
could be utilized as it was intended. Although the garage at the West Station has become critical
to winter operations, the slope of the concrete in the garage slopes towards the patrol squad
