The building does not provide any security provisions other than a locking front door. The <br /> investigators must interview in their private offices or in the break room. The break room serves <br /> as a training room, lunch room, conference room and is often occupied or, the popcorn and pizza <br /> odors from lunches and breaks become distracting for interviews or having meetings in this <br /> room. The room does not provide any sound barrier. As stated earlier conversations are heard <br /> through the duct work. Therefore the only other option is for investigators to interview in their <br /> offices. Patrol deputies have no other option than to interview in the break room. The <br /> investigators have to remove any evidence or reports from other cases they are working and <br /> allow an individual they have never met into their private offices for an interview. Some of the <br /> individuals are dangerous, suffering from mental health issues, under the influence of alcohol or <br /> chemicals, and do not want to be held responsible for their role in criminal activity. At the <br /> courthouse and jail there are metal detectors to locate weapons; however at the West Station <br /> individuals walk off the street and into an investigators office with absolutely no security. <br /> Dangers escalate in the winter as it is much easier to hide dangerous weapons. <br /> Additionally, some individuals being interviewed do not arrive alone. There is no common <br /> area for individuals to wait as their friend is being interviewed. It is not reasonable to ask <br /> individuals to wait in the car as the climate in ND is not conducive for someone to wait hours in <br /> the car. The individual waiting normally has information or is an alibi witness for the person <br /> being interviewed. As a result another investigator or patrol officer is required to sit with this <br /> individual and engage this person because if not the interview can be heard through the duct <br /> work. <br /> The patrol squad room consists of eighteen cubicles; two cubicles are a work station with a <br /> computer and one cubicle is for the Sheriffs Reserve Unit (SRU).
