<br />Sheriff Rotational Meeting-June 2, 2008 1 <br /> <br />SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT ROTATIONAL MEETING <br />JUNE 2, 2008-4:35 PM <br /> <br />1. MEETING TO ORDER <br />The Sheriffs Department Rotational Meeting was called to order with commissioners <br />present as follows: Scott Wagner, Ken Pawluk, Robyn Sorum and Darrell Vanyo. Vern <br />Bennett was absent. Also present were: Sheriff Paul Laney, Jim Thoreson and Glenn <br />Ellingsberg. <br /> <br />2. DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES <br />· Mr. Wagner said he met with Sheriff Laney, Mr. Thoreson, and the county <br />administrator last week to discuss re-assignment of duties within their department. <br />"V_ The sheriff will submit updated position analysis questionnaires (PAQ) for the Jail <br />~ Administrator and Juvenile Detention Supervisor. Mr. Waaner asked if any <br />commissioners obiect to this item beina placed on a future consent aaenda for <br />consideration. Hearina no obiections. the item will be scheduled on the next consent <br />aaenda. <br />. Sheriff Laney said the department is within their budget to date and is watching gas <br />prices closely. Currently, their department has not placed any restrictions on mileage <br />traveled by deputies. <br />. Sheriff Laney believes the re-structuring of the department will create a more <br />efficient, effective and streamlined organization with a fluid chain of command. <br />. The D.A.R.E officer resigned and the sheriff met last week with school <br />superintendents to analyze the program. Currently, the program ends at 5th grade <br />and he wants to take a more pro-active approach and look at implementing the <br />program through the 12th grade. <br />. Discussion was held regarding the commissary program. The sheriff will be asking <br />the commission to consider the Sheriff's Department run the commissary program <br />and not renew the vending contract with Pepsi America. He believes revenues to the <br />county will increase. Mr. Ellingsberg discussed the goals, funding, pro's and con's, <br />program monitoring and an action plan. <br />. Sheriff Laney said currently the jail has 169 inmates. <br />. Sheriff Laney discussed federal legislation involving collective bargaining, and said it <br />most likely will be mandated within the next two years. He said some staff will attend <br />training on how to manage and administer this program. <br />. The sheriff knows the next budget year will be tight and he will not be asking for <br />additional staff in 2009. He will make do with the current staff levels for the next year. <br /> <br />3.
