B. POPULATION SERVED

Cass County is the largest county in North Dakota with a population of 123,138 p ople. The
eight schools included in the Secure Our Schools Grant total of2,458 students.

Rural schools involved in this project include:

. Maple Valley High School located in Tower City, ND
. Maple Valley Elementary located in Buffalo, ND and Oriska, ND
. Kindred Public School located in Kindred, ND
. Central Cass School located in Casselton, ND
. Northern Cass School located six miles west of Gardner, ND
. Mapleton Public School located in Mapleton, ND
. Page Elementary School located in Page, ND

C. CURRENT/PLANNED CRIME PREVENTION ACTIVITIES

Those Cass County Rural School Districts that already have a video security syst m in place
have found them to be a huge asset and success. Not only in assisting to solve cri es but also
in preventing situations by intercepting the inappropriate behavior; such as a whe a fight or
theft occurs or about to occur. The mere presence of the camera serves as a dete ent for
criminal behavior. Knowing there is a possibly of video evidence deters the crim nal activity
in that particular area.

This project would be extremely valuable during the critical incident, but the valu of the
system on a day-to-day basis should not be overlooked. Therefore, the effectiven ss of this
project will be essentially tested daily. It should also be noted that response time 0 Rural
Schools is lengthened because of their location. Northern Cass School was built ix miles from
Interstate 29 and is basically a school on the prairie that services eight communiti s.

The Cass County Rural School Districts have made a commitment to school safe by training
a Deputy to be a School Resource Officer. With our rural schools so far apart, on more
School Resource Officer is planned for the proposed Cass County Sheriff's Budg t. The
ability to add additional security through video, audio, intercom and card access ill only
enhance the capabilities of the Schools, the School Resource Officers and the She iff's Office.
