She
has been talking to masons about work on the Courthouse front plaza and the possibility of
moving the veterans monument from the center of the plaza to the side because it does pose
a danger when it is wet from rain or snow. Commissioners were in agreement to proceed with
moving the memorial plaque on the front plaza.

Also, Mrs. Johnson informed the Commissioners that she met with the State Department of
Corrections last week about obtaining a waiver on the requirement to have outdoor recreation
for the new jail, as long as there is louvered outdoor air coming into the recreation area, which
there will be.

Mr. Wieland asked how many Commissioners will be able to attend Pioneer Days at
Bonanzaville, U.S.A. and to ride in the parade on Sunday, August 15th. Mrs. Quick, Mr. Meyer
and Mr. Wieland plan to attend that event.

Mrs. Quick thanked the County Engineer, Keith Berndt, for his part in arranging a ribbon-cutting
ceremony marking completion of the new 45th Street Bridge on the Rose Coulee. Mr. Berndt
replied that this was a good example of how different jurisdictions can work together. This
bridge was constructed with 80% Federal funds, and the 20% local cost was shared by the Cass
County special 10-mill road and bridge levy and the Southeast Cass Water Resource District.

It was noted that Robert Holmbeck will begin working for Cass County as Information Services
Director on August 16, 1999. Mrs. Quick met with Mike Steiner, who is working for Cass County
on a consulting basis, concerning the completion of items in the transition plan.
