Commission Minutes--August 3, 1998 1849

Bonnie Johnson, County Coordinator, informed the board that Mike Allen, Field Service
Representative of the National Association of Counties (NACo) Deferred Compensation
Program, received an award at the NACo annual conference this year for his efforts in Cass
County during the flood of 1997. Mr. Allen extended his stay to help with community
sandbagging efforts while he was here for a semi-annual deferred compensation enrollment visit.

Mrs. Quick reported that public input meetings on the flood are continuing. Keith Berndt, County
Engineer, said the meetings have been very well attended.

Mr. Goff reported that one of his assistants, Chris Myers, is resigning to take a job with the Clay
County Attorney's Office for a 25% increase in pay, which is in addition to the recent raise
granted him in Cass County. Mr. Goff would like permission to use the same pool of applicants
who were interviewed in June and early July for an assistant state's attorney position. He talked
to his Portfolio Commissioner, Paul Koenig, and Chairperson Donna Schneider today and is now
asking for a consensus from the Board. Commissioners were in agreement to use the same
pool of applicants for the newest vacancy. Bonnie Johnson said this action is consistent with the
county's hiring policy.

Mrs. Schneider suggested continuing to hold meetings throughout the county next year similar
to the Road Department informational meetings held this year by Commissioner Wieland and
Engineer Keith Berndt, and the Sheriff's Department informational meetings held last year by
Commissioner Meyer and Sheriff Don Rudnick.

Mr. Wieland reported that Michael Montplaisir, County Auditor, is attending a meeting today in
West Fargo for the "Kids Voting" educational program.

15.
