MOTION, passed Mr. Eckert moved and Mrs. Toussaint seconded to authorize the Chairman and the Auditor to sign a railroad crossing agreement with the Burlington Northern Railroad Company for upgrading the County Road 11 crossing in Mapleton at an estimated cost to Cass County of $15,000 for rubberized crossing materials; the materials to be placed on the crossing by Burlington Northern, who will accept future maintenance. Discussion: Mr, Wieland thought the cost was too high, and Mr. Eckert said the rubber track is more expensive initially but will last longer, States Attorney Golf said the contract appears to be a standard form construction/maintenance agreement. He said he doesn't have any special knowledge of appropriate amounts of insurance specified on page 4 of the contract but the amounts appear to be reasonable. On roll call vote, motion carried unanimously. RAILROAD CROSSINGS, Information requested on future agreements Mr. Wieland expressed concern that the railroad company doesn't give counties advance warning about providing financial assistance for crossing upgrades. He said the Commission should be aware of upcoming projects before budgets are finalized. Mr. Shannon suggested adding this to the list of commission policy positions that need to be developed. Mr. Eckert will try to find out what the railroad company's policy is on crossing updates and report back at the June 17th meeting. COMMISSION OFFICE SPACE, Study desks and telephones to be installed in former Tax Director's Office MOTION, passed Mr. Wieland moved and Mrs. Toussaint seconded to incorporate five small study desks and telephones for the Cass County Commissioners in the former Tax Director's Office, at an estimated cost of $300.00 to establish the telephones and the study desks to be made available at a cost not to exceed $2,000. On roll call vote, motion carried unanimously. APPOINTMENT OF FUTURE SPACE AND PLANNING COMMITTEE Because of increased mandated programs in Social Services, namely child care, Mr. Shannon felt it is important to make future space and planning a higher priority in the work plans for the county coordinator. MOTION, passed Mr. Wieland moved and Mrs. Toussaint seconded to establish a task force for future space and planning consisting of the five Cass County Commissioners, the county coordinator and up to four county department heads (to be selected by department heads). On roll call vote, motion carried unanimously.
