<br />Early Childhood Program, Parents as Teachers Program, Nokomis Child Care Center, Rainbow Bridge, faith.based
<br />groups/congregations, private businesses, preschool and child care providers, Safe Kids Program, Family Friendly
<br />Coalition, MeritCare Parents' Fair, Children and Parents Together Program-Lisbon, Red Ribbon Campaign, and
<br />several other agencies. The Parenting Resources Center continues its strong ties to North Dakota State University,
<br />including the Extension Service, Child Development and Family Sciences, Continuing Education, and faculty.
<br />
<br />One example ofa successful collaboration is the new Traill County Parent Education Committee which just started
<br />in October of200 1. A variety of agencies representing social services, county health, Extension, Head Start, and
<br />others met to establish a yearly parenting program in their county including Hillsboro, Mayville, and Hatton. The
<br />Parenting Resources Coordinator from Region V was also invited to serve on this committee. A successful series
<br />of parenting classes has resulted from this collaboration. Some of the parenting classes included in this program
<br />year were Positive Parenting of Teens, Developing Responsibility in Children, Epidemic of Childhood Obesity,
<br />and Bullying: No More Victims. There are plans to continue offering parenting programs in the fall, including the
<br />Walking the Talk parenting for prevention training (alcohol & other substance use) in two Traill communities.

<br />Some of the other collaborations planned for the 2002.2003 program year include the Region V csce Regional
<br />Prevention Coordinator's efforts, Mayors' Task Force on Substance Abuse (Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead, and
<br />Dilworth), Traill County Parent Education Committee, Richland County's 2]" Century Learning Center Program
<br />Grant & Richland County Extension. Children and Parents Together Program in Lisbon. Casselton's Healthy
<br />Communties-Healthy Youth Initiative, Nokomis Child Care Center in Fargo, Charism Center in the McConnick
<br />Park neighborhood in Fargo, Children's Museum at Yunker Farm. Steele County Adult Education Program,
<br />MeritCare Parents' Fair, and Midwest Kid Fest to offer parenting education, parenting for prevention education,
<br />informational booths, parenting resources (books, videos, etc.), and many other services and support.

<br />3. Community to be served:
<br />As an NDSU Extension Service program, the Parenting Resource Center is committed to providing research-based
<br />parenting education 10 parents, families, and professionals in the Region V counties ofCass. Traill, Steele,
<br />Ransom, Sargent, and Richland. Educational programming in Region V has taken a variety of forms. During the
<br />2001-2002 programming year more than 2,000 individuals have attended parenting classes/workshops, nearly 900
<br />individuals, agencies, and organizations received tile monthly "Parenting Essentials & Extras" Monthly Newsletter.
<br />and over 500 phone calls pertaining to parenting questions were answered. Parenting Pipeline, a newsletter with
<br />parenting lips for all parents of students in grades K, 2, 4, 6, is also distributed during the school year by the NDSU
<br />Extension Service and funded in part by the Parenting Resources Center in Region V counties. Parenting Pipeline
<br />was identified in the "\\/hat's Working" section of the 1999 Region V CSCC Annual Planning Initiative Regional
<br />Roundtable Discussions. The Parenting Resources Center has a website at: huo://\v\\\V.c:\t.nod:lk.\xlu/COllIltV/C:l-;S
<br />for parents in Region V to access information on parenting classes, parenting resources (videos/books) in the
<br />lending library, a web link to NDSU Parenting Infonnation. and other parenting web links.

<br />.., Need for Proiect:
<br />To ensure that every child in Region V has an opportunity to reach adulthood with a sense of self. worth, an ability
<br />to avoid risk-taking behaviors as adolescents. an ability to become self.sufficient. and prepared to raise the next
<br />generation. a strong parenting education program must be in place to give parents the tools they need in order for
<br />this to occur. The Parenting Resources Center is an established entity in Region V since 1994 in providing
<br />research-based parenting education and parenting for prevention programs, ensuring awareness of critical issues in
<br />parenting, providing parenting resources (videos. books. monthly newsletters. bulletins) to families, and
<br />collaborating with other agencies and organizations. The parenting skills learned in classes help parents provide a
<br />nurturing environment in which children can grow to be socially, emotionally, intellectually, physically and
<br />spiritually healthy. The Parenting Resources Center is committed to the success of parent education in Region V,
<br />and will continue to work on improving services to these six counties it serves.
