A declining <br />population in the state combined with decreased profitability in traditional <br />farm operations means that North Dakota must take innovative approaches <br />to diversify the economic base of rural communities. <br />Two economic sectors in Nor~ Dakota are taking proactive steps to <br />improve their economic outlook: ranching and tourism. As part of this <br />proiect, Prairie Public plans to look at some of the new ideas being tried, <br />how they are working, what their potential may be, and what issues will <br />need to be more closely examined if the early promise of new development <br />in these industries is to be realized. <br /> <br />1) Prairie Public proposes to produce Ranching Perspectives, a major <br /> documentary on the issues facing ranchers as they experiment with <br /> ways to make their operations more profitable. This program will <br /> examine new marketing techniques such as internet sales and video <br /> auctions, diversification strate~es and alternatives which can be <br /> incorporated into a cattle operation, value-added ideas with promise for <br /> North Dakota ranchers, and the issues that will affect the economic <br /> outlook for this industry. <br /> To reach a wider audience, Prairie Public would produce a version of the <br /> broadcast program which will be streamed on the Internet and develop <br /> <br />Page 2 <br /> <br /> <br />
