Explain how the project will be coordinated with other programs and/or agencies serving youth:

The Unruly Diversion Project is a collaborative effort involving the court, the schools and other service providers.
The intent of the program is to identify those youth most in need and develop a plan using all of the resources of
the community to keep the youth in the home, in school, and out of the juvenile justice system. Some of the
collaborative efforts include:
1. Juvenile court acts as gatekeeper and stipulates that the youth referred are in serious conflict with their
parents and at risk of out-of-home placement.
2. Schools report truants to Youthworks, assists in developing a plan for the student's return to school and
then monitors their attendance.
3. The school refers youth suspended from school to Youthworks, Youthworks provide an incident report and
makes recommendations on the conditions for return (Le. letter of apology, community service)
4. Interventions, short of longer term placement, may be utilized with parental consent including:
emergency psychiatric placement drug & alcohol treatment
safe beds- emergency foster care emergency shelter
attendant care (LSS)
5. Other Youthworks programs:
Becoming a Love and Logic Parent
Anger Management Program - support group teaching anger management
Peer Support - provides youth tutors and peer counselors
AmeriCorps - provides cross-age mentors (primarily college students)
Family Counseling Cooperative - provides brief family therapy using part time therapists
from the community

If applicable, explain how the project will serve minority youth in a culturally competent manner:

Historically 14% of the population referred for diversion services are minority youth. Youthworks has provided
services to minority youth since its inception. All of the staff has received training in cultural competency. An
understanding of cultural issues is critical to professional licensure and all of the staff in the diversion project
are licensed social workers. Youthworks does serve youth that do not speak English, and interpreters are
available.
