<br />PERSONNEL POLICY MANUAL <br /> <br />7.40 <br /> <br />SUBJECT: <br /> <br />HOURS OF WORK AND OVERTIME/COMPENSATORY TIME <br /> <br />EFFECTIVE DATE: <br /> <br />PAGE 1 OF 3 <br /> <br />1. <br /> <br />Hours of Work <br />The normal work week for all County employees (excluding designated <br />law enforcement personnel in the Sheriff's Department) shall be <br />forty (40) hours. A work week shall begin at 12:01 A.M. on Saturday <br />through midnight on Friday. Each department may adjust these work <br />weeks if needed. <br /> <br />A system of time sheets will be utilized by all departments as a <br />means to account for hours worked and use of leave time. All non- <br />exempt personnel time will be accounted for with the County time <br />sheet system. <br /> <br />Personnel engaged in law enforcement activities within the Sheriff's <br />Department, consistent with the provisions of the Fair Labor <br />Standards Act (FLSA), work on the 207K Exemption Plan. <br /> <br />Regular office hours for the County shall be from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 <br />P.M., Monday through Friday. Department heads may establish <br />adjusted work hours for employees which differ from the normal <br />standards, i. e., summer flex time, providing all County offices <br />remain open between the hours of 8: 00 AM and 5: 00 PM each day <br />(through the noon hour) and providing departments are sufficiently <br />staffed to handle the needs of the public and other County offices. <br /> <br />All time which is to be taken for meals is the employee's own time. <br />The normal lunch period shall be one hour set by the department so <br />as to ensure County offices remain open during the lunch period. In <br />all employment, shifts exceeding 4-;-5- 5 hours of work require a <br />minimum 30 minute uninterrupted break between the 3rd and 5th hour. <br /> <br />Employees may be permitted two (2) fifteen (15) minute break <br />periods during the workday, the time of which shall be at the <br />discretion of the department head or designee. Work breaks are to <br />be treated as a privilege and must be arranged so as not to <br />interfere with County business. Unused breaks may not be <br />accumulated nor shall break periods be utilized for early <br /> <br />SUGGESTED MOTION: <br />Move to ratify Personnel Overview Committee action of May 17, 2004, and amend Personnel <br />Policy Manual Section 7.40, Hours of Work, to require a minimum 3D-minute uninterrupted <br />break for shifts exceeding 5 hours of work. <br />
