NORTH
DAKO"rA
~ EAGUE~
~l"PIES

May 7, 2009
To: County, City and Tribal Government Officials
Re: ND Community Military Covenant - A Promise of Support
~-
0
NOFTH DAKOTA ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES
RECEIioED
MAY 1 l 2009
CA88 COUNTY (,~NISSbON
On April 24, Gov. John Hoeven signed North Dakota's first Community Military Covenant during a
ceremony at the Capitol, formally acknowledging the state's support for veterans, service members and their
families.
Will you do the same?
Gov. Hoeven was joined by North Dakota's legislative leadership, officials from each branch of the U.S.
military, representatives from tribal governments and veterans organizations, and the North Dakota League
of Cities and North Dakota Association of Counties.
"North Dakota's service members are being called on more and more to serve their state and country,
whether defending freedom in foreign lands or protecting communities from rising flood waters," Hoeven
said. "This covenant exemplifies our gratitude for their service and sacrifice and strengthens our commitment
to support them and their families. We sign this covenant in honor of the patriots who have dedicated their
lives to defending this great nation and the ideals on which it was founded."
Will you join us in hosting your own covenant signing? Enclosed you will find the tools to join hands across
this great state as we thank service members and veterans for their service, and pledge to support them and
their families as they serve our country.
We hope you will consider hosting a signing ceremony that includes your governing board as well as service
members, representatives of veterans groups and the business community. It is our goal to have documents
signed by all tribal governments, cities and counties by August 1, 2009. In the packet you will find two
copies -one for your display and one to return to the ND League of Cities in the enclosed envelop. Please
also consider sending a photograph of your signing ceremony for our publications.
This initiative is not borne of a need to gather support; rather, it stems from a desire to formalize the
incredible commitment cities, counties, tribal governments and the business community have made to
members of the military and their families. The flood efforts in recent weeks have driven home what an
important role our military and community members share, and it's just one of many examples we recognize
with this covenant.
Help North Dakota become the first state in the nation to achieve 100% support!
North Dakota Community Military Covenant - ftanding ft~ong Together
The North Dakota Community Military Covenant is the work of the Interservice Family Assistance Committee, the ND
League of Cities and the ND Association of Counties. ISFAC comprises military service branches, the Governor's Office,
Congressional offices, veterans organizations and the business community with a connection to supporting service
members and their families.
