who currently works as a 60% FTE, who is willing to work
the remaining 40% FTE in our office during the spring and
summer.

.

Temporary full-time attorney: It is very difficult to locate
attorneys who would be willing to work full-time, for a
temporary period of time, handling prosecution matters.
Although I had a line on one attorney, that did not pan out
when her family situation changed. It may be possible to
find a someone in this category.

.

Contract attorney: In the absence of finding a temporary
full-time attorney, it may be possible to contract with an
attorney for this purpose. I have contacted attorneys who
have criminal justice experience and am further exploring
this approach.

There are inherent savings already within the current budget for the
State's Attorneys Office. We added two new staff members in January
2004. Due to the hires we made and the benefit choices they made,
there is an anticipated budget savings (amount to be determined). One
of the attorneys who will be out on medical leave does not have
sufficient accrued vacation and sick time to cover the entire 12-week
absence. Accordingly I anticipate a budget savings there (amount to
be determined).

I am working with Personnel and the Auditor's office to calculate the
budget adjustment I may need to address this situation. I will provide
further details of both the expected savings and costs at the
Commission meeting. Thank you for your consideration of this request.

~
.

Ø(.~..4
Bir . urdick
Cass County State's Attorney
