<br />Commission Minutes-August 11, 2008 3404 <br /> <br />6. FIRST LINK <br />Cindy Miller, Executive Director of First Link, was present. They are requesting $5,000 for <br />2009 to help with costs associated with volunteer disaster services through First Link. The <br />request is the same amount approved in 2008. <br />MOTION, passed <br />Mr. Vanyo moved and Mrs. Sorum seconded to approve the 2009 <br />preliminary budget for First Link in the amount of $5,000. On roll call <br />vote, the motion carried unanimously. <br /> <br />7. HUMANE SOCIETY <br />Nukhet Hendricks, Humane Society Executive Director, was present. They are requesting <br />$2,000 for next year to help continue their work in animal rescue, adoption and humane <br />education. The county contribution in 2008 was $2,000. <br />MOTION, passed <br />Mr. Wagner moved and Mr. Bennett seconded to approve the 2009 <br />preliminary budget for the Humane Society in the amount of $2,000. <br />On roll call vote, motion carried unanimously. <br /> <br />The board took a break at 9:40 AM and reconvened at 9:55 AM with all members present. <br /> <br />8. STATE'S ATTORNEY <br />Birch Burdick, State's Attorney, was present. The 2009 budget proposal is similar to last <br />year and includes two grants (COPS and VOCA grants); a decrease in copier maintenance; <br />an increase for off-site file storage; and software and hardware budgeted by Information <br />Technology. He did not include any remodelinQ expenses in anticipation of re-locatinQ part of <br />the office to the third floor because the 2008 budQet included $30,000 for these costs. Also. <br />he plans to use funds from the 2008 budQet to purchase a new copier for the third floor. <br /> <br />Mr. Burdick said the budget does not include a request for additional staff; however, in 2010 <br />he most likely will ask for an additional support staff and request the drug prosecutor, which <br />is funded through the COPS grant, be made into a full-time attorney. <br />MOTION, passed <br />Mr. Vanyo moved and Mr. Wagner seconded to approve the 2009 <br />preliminary budget for the State's Attorney as submitted. <br />Discussion: Mr. Wagner appreciates the effort Mr. Burdick provided <br />to keep his budget request similar to last year. On roll call vote, the <br />motion carried unanimously. <br /> <br />9. VETERANS SERVICE <br />Jim Brent, Veterans Service Officer, was present. The budget for 2009 increased <br />significantly from last year due to a request for one additional veteran service representative. <br />The budget also includes funds for office furniture for the staff person, and with the <br />anticipation of moving their office to the third floor of the Courthouse, also includes furniture <br />for a meeting room, conference room and reception area. <br /> <br />Mr. Wagner said a formal recommendation has not been made from the Building Committee <br />regarding use of space on the third floor. He said the State's Attorney and Veterans Service <br />are considered the potential candidates for the space. The commission will need to formally <br />approve a recommendation. <br />
