IV. Issues Sanborn does Address

A. Seams Running through Buildings

As discussed in the radial displacement section, Sanborn automatically routes seam lines
around buildings to avoid aesthetic problems. These aesthetic problems are caused by
radial displacement of a single elevated feature from two different angles.

Seam lines passing through vehicles can also cause aesthetic concerns. A truncated car
does not interfere with interpretation of the data, so it is not grounds for rejection of
orthophoto imagery. However, as a standard product, Sanborn does route seam lines to

avoid vehicles.

Example of a building with a seam
running through it. This is grounds
for rejection of the data.

B. Smeared Terrain

In areas of steep terrain, where the slope of the ground and the angle of photography are
close to parallel, the imagery will appear blurry or smeared. Sanborn corrects this
problem with software that automatically selects the best photograph for the area, based
on terrain, camera angle, and proximity to photo center.

Example of smeared terrain.

Services Agreement between The Sanborn Map Company, Inc and Cass County, North Dakota

18
