Burdick
Cass County State's Attorney

DATE:

March 6, 2008

RE:

Approval of State's Attorney VOCA Grant Application

*********************

I request that this be placed on the consent agenda for the next
Commission meeting.

The Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) was passed by Congress in 1984 to
assist states in providing high quality services related to the emotional
healing and recovery of crime victims. The Department of Justice
administers the funds at a federal level, and the NO Department of
Corrections and Rehabilitation administers it at a state level.

We have applied for, and received, this grant for many years. The
amount of our current request ($29,403) is similar to our requests in
recent years. We have not increased our request this year because we
have already been advised there is going to be a decrease in available
federal funding during this grant cycle. VOCA recipients must provide a
25% local match, in cash or in kind. Because the grant money we receive
is limited in scope, the County more than covers the local match portion
in the remaining salary and benefits the County provides to our staff.

The grant money is used in support of the two victim/witness coordinators
we employ in our office.

Suggested Motion: Authorize the State's Attorney to apply for the
VOCA grant and to sign the appropriate application documents, and
if the grant is approved, authorize the State's Attorney to sign the
subsequent related grant documents.
