Through my advocacy work, and as a family member of a person with a mental illness,
I've established working relationships with people within the human services field and
some criminal justice areas.

Acltievements in Mental Health Field
In 2002, I was selected and trained to become an Instructor for NAMl's Family-to-
Family twelve week educational course on mental illness for family members in Iowa. I
graduated two classes and helped created a support group.

In 2003, I won unanimous support from both the House and Senate in North Dakota for
support of my bill which entered a definition for Alternative Treatment Order into North
Dakota's Century Code, and made a language change to the criteria section of the
commitment law. Historically speaking, it is rare for a single individual to gain
bipartisan support, successfully move a bill through both Houses, and obtain the
Governor's signature on a law change - especially during the first session in which it is
attempted. This personal project was done in the hope that individuals would not have to
commit a dangerous act before they could be admitted for a 24 hour psychological
evaluation.

In 2007, the grant proposal that I helped craft along with Chief Deputy Ellingsberg, with
input from the JICC, was selected by the Department of Justice for a diversion project
targeting people with mental illness who come into contact with the criminal justice
system.

References

Senator Timothy Mathern
429 16th Avenue South
Fargo, ND 58013
home phone: (701) 235-8917
work phone: (701) 476-7216 - Prairie at St. John's

Candace Fuglesten, Director
Southeast Human Service Center
2624 9th A venue South
Fargo, North Dakota 58103
work phone: (70 I) 298-4500

Chief Deputy Ellingsberg, Administrator
Cass County Jail
450 34th Street South
Fargo, North Dakota 58103
work phone: (701) 271-2914

3
