The Unit paid $64,71lfor rent for the calendar year of2007. Based on 5,078 square feet, this would come to approximately $12.75 per square foot. However, the retirement ofa Unit employee at the end of January 2007 created a vacancy in an office of 88 square feet which was subsequently occupied by an employee of the State's Attorney's Office. There was no adjustment to the rent charged the Unit to reflect the change. Based on 4,990 square feet, $64,711 would come to approximately $12.97 per square foot. As for a rent proposal for 2008, the state is unable to pay more than the County's demonstrated costs. The Cass County Auditor has estimated those costs to be in excess of $17.00 per square foot, substantially more than the $12.75 previously charged. The Regional Unit would prefer to remain in the current space, but appreciates the serious space needs facing the County. Recognizing the possibility that vacating the current space may be necessary, the Unit has been actively searching for space, including obtaining the representation of a broker, visiting several potentia110cations, and consulting with various experts on the details and requirements of moving such a large office. It is estimated that the move could take several months from the time the location is identified.
