Project Description:

In recent years the City of Mapleton, ND has made a considerable investment in
flood protection, which has resulted in new developments and a greater need in traffic
safety along major roads. Close proximity to the Fargo Metropolitan Area, as evidenced
in recent years, will increase the pace of growth in Mapleton and therefore create larger
volumes oftraftic on Cass County Highway 11, which is a m~jor gateway to the City.
The City of Mapleton has received numerous inquiries for incremental development of
land in the area adjacent to the path proposed in this application. It is also anticipated
that larger scale commercial and shopping facilities will be located in this area within the
next 5-7 years. This expansion in traffic drastically increases the need for a multi-use
path along Cass County Highway 11.

The Mapleton Multi-Use Path Project is a two phase project comprised of a 10 foot wide,
3500 foot long, multi-use concrete path adjacent to and within the right of way ofCass
County Highway 11 within the City of Mapleton. The tirst phase of the project is 2000
feet long and will run along the main residential areas of Mapleton from City Hall and the
Community Center past the Mapleton Elementary School to further residential
development near the south of town. Phase II is 1500 feet long and will1ink up with
phase I at Carl Olsen Street where it will continue to a convenience store just north of
Interstate Highway 29. Phase I is being applied for through North Dakota Department
of Transportation Safe Routes to School Program. This new multi-use path will serve to
allow safer and more desirable access for pedestrian and bicycle traffic as well as easing
the safety concerns for travelers on Cass County Highway 11.
