with that allowable seepage rate, our water table could easily be contaminated in only about a
years'time.
The state of Iowa is a leader in CAFOs.They are also the second highest cancer incidence in the
U.S.with the fastest rate of increase in cancer cases in the nation. Many experts connect this to the
exponential growth of CAFOs,which contribute to unsafe nitrate levels in the drinking water. The
amount of waste that a 12,500 head dairy produces, equates to a population of about 525,000
people.
Do we want our state to be the next statistic?I ask that you consider having your water experts
research the ramifications to the City of Fargo from this proposed dairy.
Riverview has not been transparent about this project.According to the current laws relating to
Agriculture in North Dakota, Riverview would NOT be responsible for any consequences or
damages incurred with the above scenarios. They also would be exempt from any penalties if
polluted waters enter our waterways.
We must ask ourselves,"Is this geographically the best location?"
Also, because Riverview is a Limited Liability partnership (LLP),they have zero tax consequences.
They would simply take profits out of North Dakota; lower real estates values; leaving North Dakota
residents responsible for the environmental costs and impacts, making us a dumping ground for
the growth of their business.
So questions remain; Does North Dakota want to follow Iowa and other states to open up these
large scale Ag Corporations to come into our valley, only to pay the consequences later?
Let me also add that my points here have only been in reference to just the 12,500 cow project
proposed in Abercrombie Township. There is also an additional 25,000 cow operation proposed for
Traill County,Which will compound water issues for downAyalocommunities.
So thank you once again for your time. I will stay until the end of the meeting if anyone would have
any further questions or would like a copy of the prepared talking points I've just covered.Thank
you.
Erik Olson
abercrg@gmail.com
701-640-3443
