Worden, Heather

From: Berndt, Keith
Sent: Friday, September 07,200710:36 AM
To: {Cass}-Commissioners
Cc: Johnson, Bonnie; Worden, Heather; Montplaisir, Michael
Subject: Update on Closed County Bridges

RECEIVED
SEP 7 20071

CASS COUNTY COMMISSJON

Commissioners,

I'm writing to provide an update on the closed bridges that have received significant attention in recent days.

Durbin Bridge (located on the south side of section 32 of Durbin Township): I've put together a plan to replace
the rotted abutment timber. I met this morning on site with Industrial Builders and expect to have a cost proposal
shortly for completing the work. Its a relatively easy job to repair that part of the bridge so I expect the proposal
will be affordable. Industrial Builders will likely be able to complete this work the week of September 17th. These
repairs should allow us to safely reopen the bridge for reduced loads in a timely manner and keep the cost below
for threshold for going through the 6 week formal competitive bid advertisement process. This is a quick fix that
will allow us to get the bridge open but it does not address the decayed piling and deck.

Everest Bridge: We've put together a plan which involves replacing both abutments on the Everest Township
Bridge. It will be more expensive than the above Durbin Bridge fix, but I'm hopeful we can keep the contracted
portion of the work below $30,000 so we are not required by law to go through a lengthy bid process. I plan to
get informal bids next week and have a recommendation on a contract for the September 17 Commission
meeting.

If you'd like to place these matters on the regular agenda at the September 17th meeting, I could brief it at that
time. Otherwise, I'll place the contract approval documents on the consent agenda.

Keith Berndt

9/7/2007
