2

Weed Control Progress Report July 7, 2023

Period from June 10 to July 7, 2023 submitted by Stan Wolf

Monthly Report:

Budget Hearing: The County Commission will be holding its budget hearings
from July 26 to 27. Weed Control is scheduled to present its budget on
Wednesday July 26 at 8:45 am.

Leafy spurge flea beetle collections: Weed Control staff have collected Leafy
spurge flea beetles and made distributions to numerous landowners and made a
couple of distributions on railroad rights-of-way. Over 21,000 flea beetles have
been collected and distributed.

Weed Spraying: It has been interesting looking for Leafy spurge in the road
ditches where we have been spraying for several years. Leafy spurge has been
delayed in growing up above the grass canopy. This has been noticed by
several other weed officers across the state. Leafy spurge that has not been
sprayed was up and flowering in late May and early June. Quite a contrast.

Walker’s Lawncare has started spraying county roads rights-of-way. To date 523
acers have been sprayed at a cost of $12,931. J&J Spraying will start soon.

Spotted hemlock is flowering now and has been found in the same areas as last
year. Water Resources has hired a contractor to spray for Spotted hemlock in
their drains and will start spraying next week. Walker’s Lawncare has been
contacted to use his drone to spray the Spotted hemlock areas in road rights-of-
way. This will be interesting to watch.

Weed Complaints: Several properties in the Horace area have been notified to
control Canada thistle.

Complaints: A farmer south of Fargo contacted me regarding crinkled leaves on
his soybeans. I invited Dr. Quincy Law, NDSU, to help investigate his fields. The
impacted areas are along the county road where we sprayed last summer. It
appears in areas where the spring melt waters backed up onto the field drains
and other low lying areas. At this point, no discernible explanation is evident to
why the soybeans are showing crinkled leaves. The impacted plants with
crinkled leaves are shorter than non-impacted plants and can be found next to
one another within the same row. Numerous soil samples were taken for
greenhouse analysis at NDSU.

Upcoming Events:
NDWCA Board meeting September 26, Bismarck
NDWCA Area meeting October 23, Valley City
