John Hoeyen
Din'doT Ccy{)t'r1tor

February 2007

A new federal program caned Safe Routes to School~ administered by the North Dakota
Department of Transportation (NDDOT), empowers communities to make walking and
bicycling to schools a safe and routine activity. This is why I am encouraging
communities across North Dakota to start a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. This
program promotes walking and bicycling to schools as a routine daily activity. Safe
Routes to School is a national movement to create a safe, convenient, and fun opportunity
for your children to get to school safely each day, while at the same time decreasing the
likelihood of childhood obesity.

Starting a SRTS program is an opportWlity to get involved in a program that will have a
positive impact on your community and the citizens who live there by improving health,
reducing traffic, helping the environment, and enhancing neighborhood safety.

The enclosed packet includes the Safe Routes to School Guidelines and Application.
These materials are also available on the NDDOT Web page at www.dot.nd.eov. Please
consider helping your community get involved in this safe program that promotes a
healthy and active lifestyle from an early age.

Sincerely,

~

Francis G.
