In earlier correspondence, I sent you information about the process, including minutes from a previous commission meeting when the salary of the state's attorney was established. We have not had any newly elected department heads since that time. Further, I made a recommendation that the portfolio commissioner from the respective departments should meet with the incoming elected officials to make a salary recommendation for the Board. On Monday, following the legislative meeting, Commissioner Vanyo met with Paul Laney, Sheriff-elect, and Commissioner Bennett met with Jewel Spies, Recorder-elect. Commissioner Vanyo looked at the 2007 salary of Chief Deputy Jim Thoreson and the 2007 salary of the sheriff, had he been re-elected. The mid-point of those two numbers was established and placed in the pay grid that matched most closely for payroll. Commissioner Vanyo is recommending a salary of $85,309. Commissioner Bennett met with Jewel Spies and recommends a salary of $56,776. They established a benchmark which was also plugged into our payroll grid to reach the salary noted in the motion.
