These adolescents often face severe consequences for angry, "acting out"
behavior (termination of employment, suspension in school, placement in out-of-home care),
Anger management includes the aggressive adolescent and youth who act out their anger more
passively in self-destructive ways (withdrawal and isolation from relationships with parents,
peers and their communities, suicidal gestures, low self-esteem),
Anger and aggressive behavior are clearly major problems for many teenagers. Not only do
anger and aggression cause difficulty for adolescents and those attempting to work with them,
but the adolescents' frequent preference for using such behavior in conflict situations interferes
with the positive and constructive behavior they may possess, The purpose of anger control
training is to teach high-risk youth (1) to understand what causes them to feel angry and to act
aggressively and (2) techniques they can use to reduce their anger and aggression, The Anger
Management Training Program is comprised of seven weekly sessions (1.3hrs/session) requiring
the active participation by the participants, both during the training sessions themselves and by
completing assigned homework between sessions. Parents complete a companion program at the
same time.
-- Programs To Be Operated By: Youthworks 317 South University Drive, Fargo ND 58102
-- Collaborations & Interagency Agreements: Juvenile Court

Successes
-- Further Juvenile Justice Involvement: No releases to obtain that information
-- Parent Evaluation: Open ended evaluation-outcome eval to be developed in 2002
-- Participant Evaluation: Open ended evaluation-outcome eval to be developed in 2002 that will
focus on a decrease in "episodes" of anger

Challenges
-- Limitations: Anger management is a voluntary program which requires active parental
participation over an 7 weeks, once per week for 1.25 hours
-- Staffing: 2 facilitators for each group (one youth group and one parent group)

Funding Issues
-- Current Funding: JAIBG funded project with participant fees,
-- Long term funding {Source & Amounts}:
-- Co-Payments: $50 per family (waived or reduced based on circumstances)

Page 9
