Vanyo Fargo, North Dakota Robyn Sorum Hotace, North Dakota Joyce Schepp Commission Assistant Box 2806 211 Ninth Street South Fatgo, North Dakota 58108 701-241-5609 Fax 701-241-5728 IVWW.casscountygov.com RESOLUTION #2006-1 SUPPORTING NORTH DAKOTA'S PREFERRED ALTERNATIVE AND THE NEED FOR A WATER SUPPLY SUPPLEMENT WHEREAS, a severe drought in the Red River Valley would produce a negative economic impact of approximately $2.4 billion annually, and the current water sources would suffer negative environmental impacts during a severe drought if an alternative water supply is not found; and WHEREAS, the Cass County Board of Comrnissioners reviewed information on the Red River Valley Water Supply Project, and specifically, t~e GDU (Garrison Diversion Unit) Import to the Sheyenne River Alternative; and WHEREAS, this alternative would supplement existing water supplies to meet future water needs with a combination of Red River, other North Dakota in-basin sources, and water imported from the Missouri River; and WHEREAS, the Cass County Commissioners understand the GDU Import is North Dakota's preferred alternative for the following reasons: . Capability of meeting water supply needs of the Red River Valley now and in the future . Designed to provide the core infrastructure for all water systems in the valley · Flexible enough to accommodate industrial growth and entertain the possibility of future expansions . No significant negative environmental impacts . Provides the most positive environmental benefits . Least cost of the alternatives that were considered NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of County Commissioners of Cass County, North Dakota, is concerned about the future of a reliable water supply in the Red River Valley, considering today's population and water demands; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, tt)e Board of County Commissioners of Cass County, North Dakota, hereby encourages approval of the GDU Import to the Sheyenne River as the preferred alternative to supplement existing water supplies in the Red River Valley.
