Commission Minutes--December 7, 1998 1906

A written report on buildings and grounds activities was prepared by Bonnie Johnson, County
Coordinator. Mr. Montplaisir gave a verbal account in her absence as follows: 1) insurance
claim for the juvenile detention center sewage backup totaled about $11,000; 2) an insurance
claim has been filed for damage to a neighboring property when a garage and a car inside the
garage were hit by county snow removal equipment; 3) December 14th luncheon with Cass
County legislators, commissioners and department heads; and 4) use of the county parking lot
on Sunday evening, December 20th, for a dance at the former Emerson Smith School building,
west of the Cass County Annex, requested by a college student from NDSU. Mr. Meyer said
his only objection would be if it snows and the county would be involved in the snow removal
that evening. Commissioners were in agreement that the group may utilize the parking lot,
however, the Sheriffs Office should monitor the event and the employee parking lot gates
should be locked in the upright position to discourage vandalism and driving on the boulevard.

Mrs. Schneider reported that she signed a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha
District, supporting construction of the Maple River dam and urging them to issue the required
regulatory permit to allow the project to proceed. The county believes the dam is an important
component in accomplishing a goal of reducing the economic, social and environmental impacts
of catastrophic flooding in Cass County.

19.
