There are a few different characteristics that help distinguish these weeds. The simplest difference is the presence of short dense hairs on redroot pigweed as palmer and waterhemp have no hairs on the plants. The main distinguishing characteristic between palmer and waterhemp is the difference in petiole length. The petiole is the small stem that connects the leaf to the base stem of the plant and it is short on waterhemp, and on palmer it is as long or longer than the length of the leaf. <br />Wallet size Palmer amaranth ID <br />cards are available by calling the <br />Cass County Extension Office at <br />701-241-5700. <br />Identification of Palmer amaranth
