Commission Minutes-August 11, 200~ 2942

8. VETERAN'S SERVICE OFFICE
Jim Brent, Veteran's Service Officer, referred to his budget summary cover letter of July 29.
He discussed increases in the technology line item to purchase a new software program, a
new desk for his office and a new filing position. He currently has a part-time position from
a temporary employment agency, but said the position is needed on a full-time basis to
keep up with the increased workload.

Mr. Wagner asked if the full-time position would occupy the same space in the Veteran's
Service Office as the current part-time worker, and Mr. Brent concurred and said it is
working out well. He said there is a table outside of his office, with filing cabinets nearby,
and it is adjacent to their file room.

Mr. Vanyo called attention to the amount of money paid to Cass County veterans in the year
2001, and it was significantly less in the next five years, according to the hand-out Mr. Brent
provided today. Mr. Brent said the amount includes all expenses, including medical care.
MOTION, passed
Mr. Bennett moved and Mrs. Sorum seconded to approve the
Veteran's Service budget as presented in the amount of $196,028.
On roll call vote, the motion carried unanimously.

9. COMMISSION BUDGET
Mr. Vanyo asked commissioners to refer back to the commission budget since there are a
few minutes until the next budget group arrives.

Specifically, the board again looked at pages 22, 23 and 26 of the preliminary budget.
MOTION, passed
Mrs. Sorum moved and Mr. Wagner seconded to approve the budget
amount of $197,471 on pages 22 and 23. On roll call vote, the motion
carried unanimously.

MOTION, passed
Mrs. Sorum moved and Mr. Wagner seconded to approve commission
projects in the amount of $604,646 on page 26, which includes
$100,000 for county share of Maple River Dam special assessments.
On roll call vote, the motion carried unanimously. This amount also
includes security at the courthouse and annex, and Mr. Wagner said
the board can determine later if this item will be moved to the sheriff's
budget.

10. HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Tim Hoheisel, Executive Director of Bonanzaville, was present along with members from the
board of directors and one staff person. The Cass County Historical Society submitted a
budget request for an increase from $39,000 this year to $100,000 for 2006 from Cass
County. Mr. Hoheisel said they are grateful and appreciative of any funding received;
however, the increase in county revenue would help make needed repairs on old buildings,
rather than being forced to close them because of unsafe conditions. He said other plans
for increasing revenue include a fall membership drive and reprinting of historical books
from the 1800's that will be for sale at the "Pioneer Days" annual event.
