The computers that
are being replaced am 300 Mr× or below. In the past we havc
fom~attcd the drives on these machines, reinstalled an operating system,
and then offered them to the employees through m~ auction system.

This has been a time consuming practice when we only had a few
machines, and the return on our time investment has been minimal.
These machines are not in great demand, either in home or office use,
because they are extremely slow in comparison to computers being sold
today. My preference would bc to format the hard drives to eliminate
any programs or data on the drives and then consign or sell the
computers to a reseller such as North Dakota Surplus Properties in
Bismarck or other local computer dealer.

The time savings for Information Services staffwould off'set any lost
sale proceeds. We also ran into the problem with supplying a licensed
operating system when selling to individuals, by selling with an empty
hard drive we eliminate any copy-write problcms.

Sincerely,

Micti'-ael Mont~lSisir CPA.
County Auditor

SUGGESTED MOTION:

Move to dispose of personal computers being replaced tN'ough North
Dakota Surplus Properties or other computer dealer.
