At the
time, we were planning to wait until aRer the North Dakota Association of Counties
(NDACo) complcted its technology assessment of the county before considering
biting a new director for the deparlment. The purpose oftbis letter is to bring you up
to date on the progress of the department and the implementation of the technology
plan.

Technology Plan
The Technology Plan was approved by the County Cornmission on July 1, 2002.
Since thcn, the Technology Committee has been directing the implementation of the
p an by Informatmn Scrvices and the NDACo.

During the past few months, the personal computers and network server have been
installed at the new jail. One server was replaced at the courthouse, and server
problems that were causing lockups with computers have been corrected. In July, the
county also purchased soiiware licenses to upgrade the current computers to thc XP
operating system.

In October, replacement compotcrs were ordered for those personal computers being
replaced this year along with the replacement AS400. Information Services and the
NDACo will begin this weekend with upgrading the computers that are not being
replaced. These machines will have additional memory installed, if necessary, and the
XP operating system will be installed. The machines will have Microsofl Office and,
in sonre cases, Word Perfect installed.

November will be the month that the new personal computers will bc installed in
county offices. This will again be a joint project between Information Services and
the NDACo. This process of upgrading servers, operating system, and personal
computer replacements has been, and will be, an important training tool for our
Network Specialists. Working side by side wif~ the staff from NDACo allows them to
learn new processes and techniques for addressing problems with thc county networks
and personal computers.

In December, the Information Services staff and High Plains Technology will be
replacing our current AS400 with thc new AS400. If possible, ;ve will be making the
switch the first weekend of December, with the second weekend of D¢cembcr as the

FAX 701-241-5728
