Its popularity for boating and canoeing/kayaking is increasing.
Minnesota has declared the Red River an official canoeing and boating route and has
provided $400,000 for development of Minnesota access sites, signs and maps.

There is a need to increase the infrastructure, particularly canoe access sites, along the
North Dakota side to support this increasing demand.

Weare proposing that Cass County install a graveled parking area on the north side of
Forest River Road, close to where it is blocked with a gate. This parking area would be
on county owned land and used by canoers and kayakers to park their cars while they
launch their vessels. We suggest that the parking area have perimeter markings such as
fence posts and that the actual launch site be primitive. Users would carry their vessels to
the rivers edge to launch. This site is approximately six river miles from The Fargo Park
District's Convent Landing which is the next public downstream access site.

In discussions with Mr. Berndt, we anticipate the cost of these improvements to be
approximately $1500. River Keepers was awarded a grant from the State of North Dakota
Game and Fish Department for $1500 to be applied towards the cost of this project.

If this is approved a suggested motion could be that Cass County develop a parking area
adjacent to Forest River Road on county owned land to be used for canoers and kayakers
utilizing funds from ND Game and Fish obtained for the project by River Keepers.

Please contact Mr. Berndt or me with any questions.

Thank you for your consideration.

~~

Robert Backman
Executive Director

"Promoting a renewed vision for the Red River of the North."

325 7th St. S. .
