This project has been in the discussion stages for several
months and is finally at the contract stage.

The advantages to Cass County are:

Fiber connection between the state and county would speed up
communications and Internet service. The fiber connection from the state
system would come into the new jail; the courthouse would be connected
via our fiber line from the new jail to the courthouse.

Fiber connection between the courthouse and the county highway shop
would replace the current microwave connection. The Infom~ation
Services Department eliminated the T1 line to the highway shop and
replaced it with a microwave connection last year in an attempt to speed
up communications between the two points. While this did work, the
speed is still not adequate to handle the large amount of data that is
transmitted back and forth between the highway shop and the courthouse.
An added benefit of the fiber connection will be in having the ability to
bring the county highway shop into our telephone s~vitch.

Improved connections with the City of West Fargo--the fiber line would
replace the current T1 line. We are also in negotiations with the City of
Fargo on putting in a city/county-owned fiber line between the City of
Fargo and the courthouse.

What are the costs?

The contract you have in your packet details the costs for the next five
years. These costs are $700 per month for the fiber line between the
courthouse and the county highway shop. This replaces the $600 per
month T1 line that we had to the county highway shop last year. This is,
however, an added cost over the current microwave system but the
improved service is essential.
