May 16, 2002 <br /> <br />CONSUMER PRICE INDEX: APRIL 2002 <br /> <br /> The Consumer Price Index for Ali Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.6 percent in April, before seasonal <br />adjustment, to a level of I79.8 (1982-84=I00), the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor <br />reported today. For the I2-month period ended in April; the CPI-U increased 1.6 percent. <br /> <br /> The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) also increased 0.6 <br />percent in April, prior to seasonal adjustment. The April level of 175.8 was 1.3 percent higher than the index <br />in April 2001. <br /> <br />CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) <br /> <br />, On a seasonally adjus,ed basis, the CPI- U tncrea~s~ed 0.o percent m April, follow~ng a 0.3percent <br />in,.rease in March. THe energy index advanced sharply for the second consecutive month--up 4.Spercent in <br />April. The index for oetroleum-based energy increased 9.4 percent, while the index for energy services was <br />unchanged. The food index rose 0.1 percent in April. Groce~ store food prices were unchanged after <br />increasing 0.2 percent m each of the preceding two months, emit and vegetable prices, which rose sharply in <br />the first t~ree months of 2002, declined 1 8 percent in April Excluding food and energy, the CPI-U rose 0.3 <br />percent in April after increasing 0.1 percent in h/larch. A larger increase in the index for shelter and an upturn <br />in the index for tobaczc and smoking products accounted for the acceleration in April. <br /> <br />Table A.
