RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT <br />FOR AMTRAK NATIONAL RAIL PASSENGER SERVICE <br /> <br />Board of County <br />Commissioners <br /> <br /> John Me?er <br />Fargo, North Dakota <br /> <br /> Donna Schneider <br />Fargo, North Dakota <br /> <br />Horace, North Dakota <br /> <br /> Scott Wagner <br />Fargo, North Dakota <br /> <br /> Alon Wieland <br />West Fargo, North Dakota <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />Amtrak National Rail Passenger Service has requested $1.2 billion <br />in the transportation 400 function of the United States Government <br />fiscal year 2003 budget, and without this level of funding, we <br />understand Amtrak will be forced to eliminate all of its long distance <br />service on October 1st of this year; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />Amtrak National Rail Passenger Service provides a valuable <br />service to the citizens of the State of North Dakota and throughout <br />the United States; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />The Administration's current request of $521 million is the same <br />level of funding as last year and represents less than half of <br />Amtrak's request; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Amtrak has sought to balance competing public service and <br /> commercial objectives without adequate resources; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />Funding forAmefica's passenger railroad is barely enough to keep <br />the system operating on a year-to-year basis and is insufficient to <br />meet its longer-term public service mission, much less its capital <br />obligations. <br /> <br />THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the governing board of Cass County, <br />North Dakota, urges the support by Congress of Amtrak's $1.2 billion budget <br />request in order to ensure continuation of a national passenger rail system. <br /> <br />Dated at Fargo, North Dakota, this 18th day of March, 2002. <br /> <br />ATTEST: <br /> <br />AIon Wieland, Chairman <br />Cass County Board of Commissioners <br /> <br />Joyce Schepp <br />Commission Secretary <br /> <br />Box 2806 <br />211 Ninth Sheet South <br />Fargo, North Dakota 58108 <br /> <br />Michael Montplaisir, Auditor <br />Cass County, North Dakota <br /> <br />701-2416609 M:~MINUTES\Comm2002~2002-AMTRAK.wpd <br />Fax 701-241-5728 <br /> <br /> <br />
