Under state law, the county needs to pay county officials and employees at least the amount allowed under chapters 11-10-15 and 54-06-09. The state seldom changes the mileage rate and it usually lags behind inflation and the increased costs of purchasing and operating a vehicle. The state rate was last changed in 2001 by the North Dakota Legislature. The emphasis most people seem to concentrate on when talking about the cost of operating a vehicle is the price of gas. I obtained some figures from AAA on the cost of a gallon of regular gas for November of each of the past few years - the price seems to be on a fairly steady rise upwards. If you look at the difference between 2000 and 2004, the price has increased by almost 27%. We all hope the price will come back down but that may not be realistic, given the world situation. While the increase in the price of gas is significant, the cost of purchasing a vehicle is also increasing. In the chart to the right, a comparison of base vehicle prices of the Chevy Impala and Ford Taurus shows that they are increasing at a steady rate. The 2004 price is between 7% and 8% higher than it was in 2000.
