Sept. 9, 2004

Cass County Commission

From Jeff Baer, Cass County Cemetery Director.

The Golliet Cemetery west and north of Gardner, ND has been abandoned for many years. The
cemetery's existence was not known until the fall of2003. In the spring of 2004 Jeff and his son
Jared went to the cemetery to try to mow the cemetery. The dirt from the surrounding fields has
been blowing into the cemetery for years as the cemetery is a least 18 inches higher then the field
next to it. There was a partial fence many rocks and brush that we removed. The gate to the
cemetery and three comer post still remain. The farmer also dug a large pit to bury other items
that were discarded next to the cemetery. The ground is very uneven and cannot really be mowed.
We used weed wackers to maintain the cemetery this year. The extra dirt in the cemetery needs
to be removed and leveled.
Jeffwas told by a local farmer that many stones in the cemetery are covered by dirt. There are
other monuments that have fallen over and need to be uprighted.

Jeffhas contacted with Mark Beaton, who is a local grave digger. he has the equipment and
experience to level the cemetery and uncover other markers in the cemetery. Mark thought he
could accomplish for about $1,500. We would like to have the work completed this fall so that
the cemetery could be seeded in grass next spring.
